Yes,
Category 1 – Clean Water
This is the least severe type of water damage.
It originates from a clean, sanitary source, such as:
• Broken supply lines
• Overflowing sinks or tubs (with no contaminants)
• Melting ice or snow
• Rainwater entering from a leak
Key point:
If left untreated, Category 1 water can quickly degrade into Category 2 or 3 as it mixes with building materials, dirt, or microorganisms.
Category 2 – Gray Water
This water contains significant contamination and may cause discomfort or illness if touched or ingested.
Common sources include:
• Washing machine or dishwasher discharge
• Toilet overflow without feces
• Sump pump failures
• Water that has sat for more than 24–48 hours
Key point:
Gray water requires protective equipment and more thorough cleaning and disinfecting.
Category 3 – Black Water
This is the most hazardous category.
Black water contains harmful pathogens, sewage, chemicals, or toxins.
Sources include:
• Sewage backups
• Floodwater from rivers, lakes, or streets
• Storm surge
• Standing water with microbial growth
Key point:
Category 3 water requires full PPE, removal of contaminated materials, and professional sanitization.
